Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament that the Supreme Court has ruled that no provision of the Parliamentary Pension (Abolition) Bill is inconsistent with the Constitution and that the Bill can therefore be passed by a simple majority in Parliament.

Announcing the Supreme Court’s determination when Parliament met on February 6, the Speaker stated that the Court’s decision had been received regarding the Bill, which had been challenged under Article 121(1) of the Constitution.

Since the Bill in its entirety, or any of its provisions, does not conflict with the Constitution, the Supreme Court has ruled that it may be passed by a simple majority in Parliament. The Speaker further announced that the Court’s determination would be published in the official report of the day’s proceedings.
