Opposition Leader Sajith’s Thai Pongal Message
16-Jan-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that the root cause of the natural disasters and conflicts facing the world today lies in the severe degradation of both nature and the human conscience. He emphasized the need for unity and compassion in building a humane society.
He made these remarks in his Thai Pongal message, in which he further noted:
The preservation of a society made up of diverse ethnicities, religions, and languages depends on the collective commitment to respecting the cultural identities of each community. It also requires a proper understanding of the core values of those cultures. If the lessons taught by the Thai Pongal festival, celebrated joyfully by Hindu devotees, are understood correctly, they can offer great value to our lives.
Thai Pongal reminds us of gratitude, teaching that love, compassion, and respect must be extended not only to nature but also to all living beings. The environmental disasters and conflicts confronting the modern world are the result of the severe deterioration of both nature and the human mind.
What must be remembered and understood during Thai Pongal celebrations is the deeper meaning behind the cultural elements reflected in its various rituals. Our responsibility at this moment is to expand, as much as possible, the avenues through which this vision and philosophy can be conveyed to society.
Schools, religious schools, Buddhist temples, Hindu temples, mosques, and churches must take immediate steps to provide proper knowledge about the cultural and religious practices of respective communities. Through such initiatives, opportunities will arise to build a society grounded in mutual respect and compassion.
He concluded by expressing his sincere hope that everyone would be given the opportunity to celebrate this cultural festival with a true understanding of its essence.
