Opposition Leader Calls Emergency Meeting to Discuss Safety of Sri Lankans
03-Mar-2026.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for an urgent special meeting to examine the escalating war situation in the Middle East and its potential severe economic and social impacts on Sri Lanka.
The meeting is scheduled to be held on March 3 at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Leaders and Members of Parliament representing all opposition parties have been invited to attend.
Currently, more than one million Sri Lankans are employed in the Middle East region. With the intensification of hostilities, concerns have arisen regarding threats to their lives and livelihoods. It has been stated that the meeting will extensively discuss the difficulties faced by Sri Lankans in the region, particularly due to airspace closures and transportation disruptions.
Discussions are also expected to focus on the potential impact of the conflict on Sri Lanka’s economy, particularly in relation to air transport, supply chains, and fuel imports.
Opposition leaders are expected to present proposals on measures the government should take to address challenges such as rising fuel prices and a decline in foreign exchange earnings.
The decisions and recommendations reached at the meeting will be conveyed to the government. It has also been noted that opposition parties will announce their common position on the diplomatic and security measures the government should undertake on this matter of national importance.
