Online Safety Bill (Repeal) Bill Presented in Parliament
25-Jun-2026.
Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake presented the Online Safety (Repeal) Bill to Parliament for its Second Reading.
The Bill was tabled when Parliament convened on April 23.
The legislation stems from a Private Member’s Motion submitted by New Democratic Front MP Ravi Karunanayake seeking the repeal of the Online Safety Act, No. 9 of 2024. Accordingly, the Online Safety (Repeal) Bill was published in the Government Gazette on April 18.
The Bill states that it shall be cited as the Online Safety (Repeal) Act, 2025, and that upon its enactment, the Online Safety Act, No. 9 of 2024, will stand repealed.
In line with this process, Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake presented the Bill for its Second Reading yesterday. The Bill has been referred to the Parliamentary Constitutional Standing Committee for consideration.
