Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and Member of Parliament, has expressed shock over reports that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed in an airstrike, stating that “we stand with Iran.”
In a statement issued regarding the reported assassination, Rajapaksa said he was shocked to learn of Ahmadinejad’s death. He described the former Iranian leader as a close friend of Sri Lanka and recalled his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Rajapaksa noted that Ahmadinejad visited Sri Lanka in 2008 at the invitation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and played a significant role in initiating key development projects, including the modernization of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery and the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project.
Stating that Iran has always been a true friend of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of all those reportedly killed in the airstrikes.
“At this difficult moment, we stand with the people of Iran. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue rather than choose the path of war,” he added.
