S. Sritharan, Jaffna District MP of the Tamil National Alliance, questioned whether what is happening in the country reflects democratic governance or the anarchy of the National People’s Power (NPP). He alleged that while previous rulers committed genocide through armed means, the NPP is attempting another large-scale genocide and ethnic cleansing through invisible and sophisticated methods such as circulars.

He made these remarks during the adjournment debate on the current situation in Parliament on Dec 18.

He said disasters and post-disaster conditions have severely affected people due to failure to protect nature and the lack of preparedness by past and present governments. The disaster exposed the lack of training among security forces to protect lives during major crises, forcing a reliance on foreign militaries such as those of the US and India.

He noted that while destruction in the South receives priority, responses in the North and East are slow. He cited hardships faced by residents of Neduntheevu, including suspended aid and disrupted transport.

He criticized the erosion of democracy, alleged intimidation of public officials by government MPs, and questioned the relevance of elected bodies if their authority is overridden by appointed structures under presidential circulars.

He accused the NPP of undermining democracy, marginalizing elected representatives, and engaging in authoritarian practices, calling for respect for democratic institutions and representatives.
