Former Minister Sarath Weerasekara has stated that Namal Rajapaksa will contest the upcoming Presidential Election as the candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

He noted that attention must be paid to the fact that terrorist elements, including Zahran Hashim, attempted to bring Gotabaya Rajapaksa into power as a Sinhala Buddhist leader.

Speaking to the media following a special religious observance held at Kelaniya Temple on June 6, organised by Weerasekara and others of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in view of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s well-being, he made these remarks.

He further claimed that various extremist elements had been listed in relation to attempts to bring Gotabaya Rajapaksa to power, and suggested that broader political motives and strategies were behind such actions.

Weerasekara also stated that Namal Rajapaksa, the party’s National Organiser, would undoubtedly be the presidential candidate, adding that he had strengthened the party significantly and that the Rajapaksa political influence remained a dominant topic in national discourse.
