Sri Lanka Police Headquarters has rejected claims made to the media by a police constable and his wife regarding an altercation between the constable attached to the Suriyawewa Police Station and Ratnapura District Member of Parliament Shantha Padmakumara. Police stated that investigations into the incident are being conducted impartially.

In a statement issued by the Police Media Division on Dec 28, police noted that the incident occurred on the 20th of the month within the jurisdiction of the Kolonna Police Division.

The constable and his wife had recently alleged that police failed to conduct a proper investigation into the incident and that those responsible for the alleged assault had not been arrested.

Rejecting these allegations, the Police Media Division said that Kolonna Police officers visited the scene on the same day the incident occurred and initiated preliminary investigations, including taking custody of the officer’s motorcycle. The Embilipitiya Criminal Investigation Division is currently conducting further investigations.

Statements have been recorded from approximately ten individuals, including the MP alleged to have been involved, eyewitnesses to the incident, and the individual who transported the injured officer to hospital. CCTV footage from a residence near the scene has also been examined. All related information was submitted to the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court on the 22nd.

The police constable concerned has been suspended by Police Headquarters, and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against him. Further legal action is being pursued jointly by the Embilipitiya Zonal Criminal Investigation Unit and Kolonna Police.
