The Maternal and Child Health Division is in excellent condition due to the provision of quality health services to the people, said Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalintha Jayatissa. He further stated that, in the same manner, other sectors of healthcare should also advance, and it was for this purpose that the Wellness Centre Project was initiated.

Under the guidance of Minister Jayatissa, the Ministry has planned, as part of the first stage of the new government’s health policy, to establish one thousand primary health centres across the country. This will ensure that people living in all parts of the nation have dignified and easy access to healthcare services.

As part of this initiative, the fifth health centre under the scheme, the Tangant Health and Wellness Centre in Matale District, was recently opened to the public under the leadership of Minister Jayatissa.

Explaining the services provided by the Wellness Centre, the Minister said that the first centre, the Mapalagama Health and Wellness Centre in Galle District, was inaugurated on the 26th. Each centre will cover four to five Grama Niladhari divisions, serving between 5,000 and 10,000 people, with a designated healthcare team assigned to it.

He emphasized that this is not a hospital, but as the signboard clearly identifies, it is a Wellness Centre. It was only because of the provision of excellent healthcare services that the country’s maternal and child health division has reached such a strong position.

The Wellness Centre Project was therefore launched with the intention that other health sectors too must progress in a similar way, he added.
