Minister Vijitha Herath holds talks with Iranian Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath also held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to inquire about the current situation in the Middle East and emphasized the need to pursue diplomatic negotiations to restore regional peace.
Following the killing of Iran’s senior leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint United States–Israeli airstrike on February 28, tensions in the Middle East have continued to escalate.
In a related development, the Iranian Navy warship “IRIS Dana” was sunk approximately 40 miles south of Galle, Sri Lanka, in an attack carried out by a United States nuclear-powered submarine.
Against the backdrop of the resulting tense situation, Minister Vijitha Herath stated that he contacted Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi by telephone to obtain information about the latest developments in the Middle East.
He further noted that he expressed serious concern regarding the escalating hostilities and stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement to restore peace in the region.
