13-Sep-2025.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath informed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk that the government is ready to pursue accountability for alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka through a domestic mechanism, with technical assistance from the UN Human Rights Council.
Minister Herath, who is attending the 60th session of the UNHRC in Geneva, met High Commissioner Türk on September 10.
The Foreign Ministry stated that a detailed discussion was held on the High Commissioner’s report, during which Minister Herath explained the Sri Lankan government’s position.
The High Commissioner expressed hope that Sri Lanka’s new government would mark a turning point in protecting human rights, and that Sri Lanka would not miss the opportunity to establish a proper, independent mechanism for investigation and accountability regarding past violations.
