Landslide Red Alert Extended for Kandy and Nuwara Eliya Districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has announced that the red-level landslide risk warning issued for eight Divisional Secretariat divisions in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts has been further extended.

Accordingly, the red alert applies to the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Minipe, Ududumbara, Tholova and Medadumbara in the Kandy District, and Walapane, Madulla, Nildandahinna and Hanguranketha in the Nuwara Eliya District.

Meanwhile, the NBRO stated that the Level 1 and Level 2 landslide warnings previously issued for the districts of Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala, Matale and Nuwara Eliya remain in effect.

The Department of Meteorology has forecast rainfall in the Eastern, Uva and Central Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. In addition, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur after 2.00 p.m. in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in parts of the Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts.

Moderately strong winds of up to 40 km per hour may occur at times in the eastern slopes of the Central Highlands and in the Northern, Eastern, North Central and North Western Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Misty conditions are expected during the early morning in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces, and in the Galle and Matara districts.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautionary measures to minimize damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
