Indictment filed against Yoshitha Rajapaksa and former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda

An indictment was filed before the High Court on August 20 against Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda in connection with allegations of corruption.

Following the filing of the indictment, the Colombo High Court Judge ordered that the accused be released on bail.

Former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda has been charged with unlawfully facilitating Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s participation in a training course at the Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom while serving as Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy from 1 September 2006 to 8 June 2007, thereby causing financial loss to the Government.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa has been indicted for allegedly obtaining an improper benefit through the arrangement.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) filed the indictment before the High Court on 31 July, with the accused facing a total of eight charges.
