Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a special letter to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, reaffirming India’s commitment to support Sri Lanka as it focuses on the next phase of recovery.

Prime Minister Modi stated that India, as a reliable partner and trusted friend, will provide all possible assistance.

He emphasized that India will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Sri Lanka in rebuilding lives and strengthening the resilience of the Sri Lankan people, as it has done in the past.

In this context, he announced that India is offering a comprehensive assistance package and has instructed External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to engage with the Sri Lankan government on its effective implementation.

The special letter from Prime Minister Modi was formally handed over to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.

In the letter, Prime Minister Modi stated:

“As your country recovers from Cyclone ‘Dithya’, I am sending External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar as my special representative to explore how India can assist Sri Lanka’s relief and reconstruction efforts.

In line with our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and our commitment to being a first responder, we launched ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ to address the sudden challenges. Indian ships, aircraft, and helicopters delivered relief supplies and essential goods. Indian specialist teams assisted rescue operations, provided emergency medical services, and restored damaged communication infrastructure. We are pleased that

‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ not only saved lives but also stands as a powerful expression of the depth and breadth of our bilateral relationship.

As Sri Lanka now focuses on the next phase, I want to assure you that India will extend all possible support as a dependable partner and friend. We will continue to stand with you shoulder to shoulder in rebuilding lives and strengthening resilience. I am pleased to inform you that India is offering a comprehensive assistance package, and Minister Jaishankar has been asked to discuss its optimal implementation with your government.

I am confident that Sri Lanka will emerge stronger than ever. India will remain closely engaged with Sri Lanka in its journey of national development and progress.”
