SLMC leader expresses gratitude for Tamil Nadu’s housing scheme for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem said he expressed gratitude, on behalf of Sri Lankan Tamil-speaking people, to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for announcing a special housing scheme for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the previous Tamil Nadu Budget.

Hakeem met the Chief Minister at the Government Guest House in TVS Tolgate, Tiruchirappalli, on 10-11-2025, where Stalin received him with a shawl. During the meeting, Hakeem presented several requests, which the Chief Minister agreed to consider favourably.

Hakeem said:

“I met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Tiruchi this morning, accompanied by journalist M.K. Shakul Hameed. First, I conveyed gratitude on behalf of Sri Lankan Tamil-speaking people for the special housing scheme announced for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

Among unresolved issues between India and Sri Lanka is the continuing conflict between Tamil Nadu fishermen and Sri Lankan fishermen. When a delegation from the Indian Union Muslim League visited Sri Lanka, we met the Sri Lankan Prime Minister and proposed forming a joint cooperative mechanism between fishermen of both sides. The PM expressed hope that favourable consideration would be given after consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I informed the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister that we intend to raise this matter in the Sri Lankan Parliament and that his support would strengthen it.

There has long been spiritual and linguistic engagement between Sri Lankan Muslims and Tamil Nadu Muslims, and Indian Muslims have significantly contributed to the spiritual and economic life of Sri Lankan Muslims. I suggested that the Tamil Nadu government conduct an official study and publish it. We are prepared to cooperate.

Similarly, I pointed out that Indian-origin Tamil communities in the hill country would greatly benefit if expert sculptors from Tamil Nadu could be sent to assist in temple construction. The Chief Minister is expected to support these matters.

I also thanked him for sending former MP M.M. Abdullah with greetings on behalf of the Chief Minister to the centenary celebration of Nagore E.M. Hanifa held in Colombo on 19 September, where the Tamil Nadu government’s Thagaisal Thamizar Award was conferred on IUML Leader Professor K.M. Khader Mohideen.”
