To avoid fuel shortages, the government is intensifying diplomatic efforts to finalise a long-term fuel supply agreement with Russia, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijith Herath stated.

During a media briefing on April 7 in Colombo, he explained that rather than relying on occasional concessional supply from Russia, the government aims to secure a long-term contractual arrangement. Following the temporary lifting of certain international sanctions on Russia, further decisions will depend on whether this period is extended.

Minister Herath will travel to Russia in May as part of his visit to Belarus to formalise official arrangements for fuel supply, ensuring continuity and stability in the national energy sector.
