The United National Party (UNP) has stated that, in order to preserve Sri Lanka’s multi-party democratic system, its position is to bring all political parties onto a single platform.

In a special statement, the UNP said that while protecting a multi-party system, it is important to operate in a manner that preserves the distinctness and policies of individual political parties. The party urged all others to adopt this stance.

It further stated that the UNP is committed to narrowing differences and working in unity with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to achieve the above objective.

The statement added that the UNP will participate in talks led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at the opposition leader’s office, and that the UNP must also hold negotiations with other political parties.

The UNP also agreed in principle to the appointment of a committee to conduct talks between the two parties, the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
