The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced that it has given the Health Minister a 10-day deadline to resolve the crisis affecting the country’s health system and the issues faced by doctors.

This decision was taken during a meeting of the association’s executive committee following the failure of negotiations with the Health Minister, GMOA Media Spokesperson Dr. Samil Wijesekera stated.

He said that doctors working in state hospitals are facing severe difficulties, including medicine shortages, human resource shortages, payment delays, and salary-related issues, placing the free public healthcare system at risk of collapse.

Despite prolonged trade union action, a written agreement reached with the Health Minister has been violated by the government. Therefore, he warned that if solutions are not provided by January 23, doctors across the country will commence an island-wide continuous strike from 8:00 a.m. on that day.
