Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala has stated that the number of police stations currently operating in the country is far higher than required, and that the government is considering closing some of them.

He made these remarks while addressing the District Coordinating Committee meeting held at the Kurunegala Secretariat.

Further elaborating, the Minister said the number of police stations in the country has increased rapidly, and instead of searching for new locations to replace stations damaged due to natural disasters such as the Boyagane Police Station, the government is now considering shutting down certain police stations that are operating unnecessarily under the current circumstances.

He added that this decision forms part of a broader review process aimed at improving the efficiency of the police service by reducing administrative expenditure and reallocating resources to areas where they are most needed.
