Global Food Crisis Warning: UN World Food Programme
13-Mar-2026.
The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that escalating conflicts in the Middle East are causing a sharp rise in fuel and food prices, which could intensify food insecurity both in the region and globally.
The organisation noted that the conflicts have already resulted in large-scale displacement, loss of lives and damage to critical infrastructure, severely affecting civilian populations.
Disruptions to supply chains caused by the conflict are pushing prices higher, further weakening the purchasing power of already vulnerable households and pushing them deeper into severe food insecurity.
The World Food Programme cited several examples, including the worsening food insecurity in Lebanon, which had already been facing prolonged food shortages, and the increasing economic pressure on Iran due to inflation, currency depreciation and economic instability.
The rise in global fuel prices has also led to an increase in food prices worldwide.
The organisation stated that it is taking steps to address the growing global food security crisis and continues to provide essential assistance to the most vulnerable populations.
