Garment Workers’ Rights Severely Violated: International Amnesty

The International Amnesty Commission has highlighted systematic violations of garment workers’ rights in countries including Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, which have generated significant profits for governments, factories, and modern garment corporations.

Two reports released by the Commission document widespread labor abuses, workers’ rights violations, and employer misconduct in the garment sector under the themes: “Freedom Denied to Garment Workers” and “Urgent Need for Modern Garment Corporations to Protect Workers’ Rights.”

The reports note that for decades, trade union rights have not been guaranteed. Workers often face low wages, long hours, and heavy workloads, exposing them to severe exploitation. The reports also allege that global garment corporations’ profit motives have undermined workers’ rights in these four countries.

Due to threats from employers, many garment workers in these countries have avoided joining trade unions. The findings are based on 88 interviews conducted across 20 factories in these four countries between September 2023 and August 2024.
