Former Speaker Ranwala Arrested and Released on Bail

The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court yesterday granted bail to former Speaker and ruling party Member of Parliament Asoka Ranwala, who was arrested in connection with a road accident in which three people, including a six-month-old infant, were injured due to negligent driving.

The Magistrate ordered that suspect Asoka Ranwala be released on two personal bail bonds of Rs. 200,000 each.

The accident occurred on 11-12-2025 at around 7.45 p.m. in the Mavaramandiya Thenimulla area, within the Sapugaskanda Police Division, involving a jeep in which former Speaker and MP Asoka Ranwala was travelling.

The jeep, which was travelling in the same direction as a motorcycle, collided with the rear of the motorcycle and subsequently collided with a car coming from the opposite direction.

Police stated that the accident injured a six-month-old infant travelling in the car, the child’s mother (25), and grandmother (55).

Following the incident, the injured infant, the two women, and MP Asoka Ranwala were admitted to the Kiribathgoda Hospital. The infant was later transferred to the Colombo Children’s Hospital for further 

treatment, while the MP and the two women were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

MP Asoka Ranwala, who was receiving treatment in hospital, was arrested by police on 12-12-2025 on charges of negligent driving, failure to prevent the accident, and causing injuries.

The Maligakanda Magistrate, who visited the hospital, granted the suspect permission to be released on two personal bail bonds of Rs. 200,000 each. The case will be taken up again on the 19th.
