Former Intelligence Chief Allegedly Supplied Arms to ‘Islamic Center’: MP Sanjeevan
06-Mar-2026.
Sanjeevan Rajasmanickam, Leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Tamil National Alliance and MP for Batticaloa, has urged the Minister of Public Safety to conduct a proper investigation into the arms supplied to the ‘Islamic Center’ by former Director of the State Intelligence Service Suresh Sale during his tenure in the Eastern Province.
This includes weapons handed over in later periods.
Speaking in Parliament on March 5, he emphasized that examining these questions in the context of Sale’s current detention would support ongoing investigations.
He also highlighted the 2014 killing of Gopi Appan and Devikan, who were surrounded by 2,000 military personnel in Vavuniya under the instructions of a Tamil politician, resulting in their deaths.
Two women from Kilinochchi were arrested in connection with the incident. Photographic evidence has been submitted to Parliament.
He alleged that the three individuals attempted to rebuild the LTTE to facilitate Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidential victory, leading to their deaths when encircled by the military. Further investigation into this case could aid current inquiries.
The former intelligence chief Suresh Sale is currently detained. Detailed information regarding weapons supplied to the ‘Islamic Center’ will be submitted directly to the Ministry of Public Safety. Weapons recovered in Batticaloa are being returned by those in possession, and further inquiry is necessary.
Responding, Minister of Public Safety and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala noted that a detailed response will be provided the following day, as part of the matters involve the Ministry of Defence.
