Extension of Emergency Law Poses Risks to Northern and Eastern Regions: MP Jeyendrakumar
08-Mar-2026.
During the parliamentary debate on March 6, Jeyendrakumar Ponnambalam stated that extending the emergency law without implementing security reforms puts the people of the Northern and Eastern provinces at risk, citing incidents like Allaippitty.
He emphasized that the law is unnecessary under current conditions and that its justification based on past emergencies is unacceptable.
He added that the extension effectively shields the military from accountability for previous human rights violations in the North and East, maintaining a threat to civilians.
He warned that the South should strengthen democracy, but the North and East face life-threatening consequences from the continued enforcement of the emergency law.
