Cabinet approval has been granted for the appointment of a committee, including an expert, to implement recommendations made by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry and the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security regarding the Easter Sunday attacks.

Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa made this statement at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on April 22, where cabinet decisions were announced.

He said there has been no permanent institutional mechanism established so far to monitor the implementation of the recommendations, and therefore no system exists to evaluate the results of such implementation.

As a result, the need has been identified to establish a comprehensive, structured mechanism based on public and national security to ensure the successful implementation of the recommendations.

Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the President, in his capacity as Minister of Defence, to appoint a committee under the supervision of the Presidential Secretariat. The committee will consist of representatives from relevant ministries and institutions, along with an expert on counter-terrorism activities and national security.

Jayatissa also noted that the Cabinet itself cannot decide on implementing commission recommendations. He said the inquiry reports were submitted with recommendations around 2021, but no proper mechanism was established to implement them. The appointed experts will study the recommendations and submit a report, based on which further steps will be taken.
