English, Hindi weakening children's talent: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on November 1 launched a strong attack on the Centre, accusing it of neglecting Kannada while “imposing” Hindi, and warned that overdependence on English and Hindi was eroding the natural talent of children in the state.
His remarks come amid the ongoing language row over three-language policy.
Speaking at the Rajyotsava Day celebrations in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said the federal structure was being undermined as Karnataka continued to be denied its fair share of resources, despite contributing significantly to the national exchequer.
“The federal government is meting out step-motherly treatment to Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah said. “We contribute Rs 4.5 lakh crore in revenue to the Centre, but receive only a paltry amount in return.”
He alleged that while generous grants are sanctioned for the promotion of Hindi and Sanskrit, other Indian languages, including Kannada are being sidelined.
“There are continuous attempts to impose Hindi,” he said, calling the move “an injustice to the classical language Kannada.”
Siddaramaiah urged Kannadigas to stand united against what he described as “anti-Kannada forces” and demanded greater respect and funding for the state’s language and culture.
“Injustice is being done to Kannada by denying adequate funds for its growth. We have to oppose all those who are anti-Kannada,” he said.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns about the growing dominance of English and Hindi in the education system, arguing that it weakens children’s creativity and connection to their roots.
“Children of developed nations think, learn, and dream in their mother tongue, but here, the situation is reversed. English and Hindi are weakening the talent of our children,” he said, adding that the neglect of Kannada in schools has led to “many problems” in education and identity.
