The 21st anniversary of the 2004 tsunami disaster was commemorated with deep emotion across the Northern and Eastern Provinces on Dec 26.

Events were held in eight districts with religious observances, candle lighting, floral tributes, and moments of silence. Bereaved families openly wept as they remembered loved ones lost to the disaster.

Commemorations took place in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara, and Trincomalee, including memorial services at tsunami monuments, schools, religious sites, and universities.

Special attention was given to sites where hundreds of victims were buried, and names engraved on memorial stones were honored. Fishermen hoisted black flags, and religious leaders conducted prayers for peace.
