Electricity Engineers’ Union Sends Urgent Letter to Minister
13-Mar-2026.
The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union has sent an urgent letter to the Minister of Power and Energy regarding the current issues affecting the country’s electricity system and the ongoing trade union action initiated by union groups.
The letter states that the Supreme Court has ruled that the privileges currently enjoyed by employees should not be reduced under any circumstances during the restructuring of the Electricity Board.
However, attempts are currently being made to attach employees to newly created companies in a manner that violates their rights.
The union further noted that after repeated requests and negotiations failed to protect employee rights, 25 trade unions were compelled to launch the protest from March 9.
It added that the boards of directors of the newly established companies should give due attention to the clauses of the proposed collective agreement presented by the 25 trade unions.
Discussions held with the heads of the new companies concluded somewhat positively, and the leaders of the four companies have agreed to discuss unresolved issues with the Minister of Power and Energy and announce final decisions thereafter.
