Electricity Board trade unions protested in front of the main office of the Sri Lanka Electricity Board, opposing the government’s decision to split the board into four divisions.

Hundreds of employees blocked streets in the rain, causing significant traffic congestion.

On September 18, the unions conducted the second day of their action, called a “sick leave strike,” due to employee shortages in branches nationwide.

Citizens reported that only limited services were available.

Employees demanded the reversal of the government’s decision to reduce benefits and allowances and called for restoration of previously granted privileges.

Heavy police and military presence was deployed to manage traffic and maintain order.

Prabath Priyantha, Secretary of the Independent Electricity Employees’ Union, stated that over 10,000 employees participated in the strike, continuing for two days in adverse weather.

He warned that if government authorities fail to address their demands, a major union strike will be launched after the 21st.
