Former Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris criticised the government, stating that disrespecting friendly nations such as Iran is not a sound foreign policy.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, he said that comments made by the government regarding Iran amount to disrespect.

He noted that Iran’s ambassador had clearly stated that a recent Iranian vessel visited Sri Lanka on the direct invitation of the Sri Lanka Navy Commander, as part of a friendly engagement.

However, the Cabinet Spokesperson’s claim that no such diplomatic invitation was extended is incorrect, he said, adding that dismissing the ambassador’s statement is unacceptable.

He pointed out that Sri Lanka seeks fuel assistance from Iran and receives support in good faith, including assurances regarding fuel shipments and the safety of Sri Lankan workers.

Under such circumstances, undermining a friendly nation’s envoy is diplomatically irresponsible, he added.

He further criticised the government for failing to introduce new policies, instead continuing the fuel pricing formula of the previous administration under Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He also highlighted the lack of a proper social safety net for low-income groups and failure to secure relief through IMF negotiations.

Allegations regarding coal procurement irregularities were raised, noting that poor-quality coal imports have led to an additional daily consumption of 800,000 litres of diesel.

He warned against attempts to suppress public protests through new anti-terror legislation, claiming it is significantly more dangerous than the 1979 law.
