The Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF)–led Tamil National Assembly has urged Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader and Indian MP Thol. Thirumavalavan that the Indian central government must exert strong pressure on Sri Lanka to achieve a collective and lasting political solution for the Tamil people—especially at a time when India’s support is essential for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.

Thol. Thirumavalavan, who visited Jaffna to inaugurate the “Karthigai Vaasam” flower exhibition at Nallur Sangiliyan Park, later met members of the Tamil National Assembly at a private hotel in Punnalai-Kattuwan on November 15.

TNPF leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, Selvarasa Kajendran, Sugas Kanagaratnam, Nadarajah Kandiban, M.K. Sivajilingam, and P. Aingaranesan participated.

During the meeting, many issues related to the situation of Tamil people living in the North and East were discussed.

Gajendrakumar stated:

It has been 39 years since the Indo-Lanka Accord was signed, yet it remains stalled. The Sri Lankan government has failed to implement the commitments it accepted. Instead, only the 13th Amendment—under a unitary state—is being discussed. Successive Sinhala-majority governments have shown no willingness to go beyond this. This has prevented Tamil politics from moving forward.

To change this situation, India must shift its position. Sri Lanka needs India’s help to revive its economy. Even those in the South who once opposed India now seek cooperation for economic reasons. As a result, India’s bargaining position with Sri Lanka has strengthened.

This moment presents an opportunity for the Eelam Tamils, who have suffered structural genocide, to press their demands. We explained this clearly to Thol. Thirumavalavan.

As a governing ally in Tamil Nadu, his cooperation is essential for the Tamil cause and for addressing the inadequacies of the 13th Amendment, as well as issues within Sri Lankan law.

Tamil Nadu’s continued silence after the armed struggle was crushed has weakened the Tamil people. Though lives may no longer be taken, the very existence of the Tamil people is being eroded. Economically, the Tamil homeland has been weakened, and their economic base is being deliberately transferred to others.

The current Anura government claims to represent all Sri Lankans equally, but in practice, Tamil existence is being systematically erased.

Tamils must understand this reality. All stakeholders in Tamil Nadu must act decisively to ensure that the Sri Lankan government offers a collective solution acceptable to all Tamil people. India must be made to exert maximum pressure toward this goal through all possible means.

We also emphasized that the very existence of Tamil people in Sri Lanka serves as a vital strategic buffer for India’s security.
