Delay in Ensuring Accountability for Enforced Disappearances; European Union

Expressing dissatisfaction before the Council, the European Union noted that delays persist in ensuring accountability for past violations, including enforced disappearances, and stressed that accountability is the cornerstone of the rule of law.
The EU representative said the government now has an opportunity to end the cycle of the past, and must act on its commitments to ensure accountability.
Welcoming the government’s proposal to establish an independent prosecutor’s office, the EU nonetheless expressed concern about the continuing lack of accountability for enforced disappearances and other past violations.
He further emphasized that although the PTA continues to be applied, any replacement law must conform to international standards. “Accountability is the central pillar of the rule of law,” he stated.
