Damage assessment begins at Negombo Prison after violence

The Department of Prisons has appointed a committee to assess the damage caused to Negombo Prison following last week's violent incident.

Prisons Department spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake said all female inmates have been transferred to other prisons, while around 700 male inmates will also be relocated to facilitate restoration work.

Authorities said the prison buildings sustained extensive damage and repairs will commence after the transfer of all inmates.
