Criminal Charges to Be Filed Against Drunk and Reckless Drivers, Says Deputy Police Chief
30-Dec-2025.
Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W. G. J. Senadeera, stated that motorists who cause accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol or through reckless driving will, in the future, face criminal legal action in addition to penalties under traffic laws.
He made these remarks at a press briefing held at the Police Media Division on 29 Dec.
Highlighting a sharp increase in road accidents compared to last year, the DIG said the number of road accidents has risen by 271, while fatalities resulting from accidents have increased by 317. However, he noted a slight reduction in the number of major accidents.
He emphasized that driver negligence and lack of attention are the primary causes of the rise in accidents. Approximately 31 percent of those affected annually by road accidents are pedestrians.
Motorcyclists and three-wheeler drivers follow as the next most vulnerable groups. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs remains a key cause of such accidents.
Accordingly, the Inspector General of Police has issued special directives to initiate cases under Sri Lanka’s Penal Code, in addition to traffic laws, against individuals who cause accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or in a dangerous manner, and to impose strict legal action, he said.
