Court Orders Filing of Indictment Against Ranil Wickremesinghe

Kotte Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara instructed the Attorney General to take immediate steps to file an indictment in the High Court against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, stating that there is sufficient evidence against him for allegedly misusing over Rs. 16.6 million in public funds to undertake a private visit to the United Kingdom.

The case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Somesara Bandara Eknayake, regarding alleged misuse of government funds during the UK trip, was taken up again for hearing at the Kotte Magistrate’s Court on April 29.

The first suspect, Ranil Wickremesinghe, did not appear in open court. His lawyers submitted medical reports and informed the court that he would not appear due to illness.

However, the second suspect Somesara Bandara Eknayake appeared in court.

Representing the CID, Chief Investigating Officer Chief Police Inspector Nalinda Herath and Sub Inspector Kumarasinghe appeared in court with further investigation reports. They were represented by Senior State Counsel Samadhari Piyasena along with Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris.

President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne, Jayantha Weerasinghe and President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana appeared for Wickremesinghe, while President’s Counsel Kalinga Indrathissa appeared for Somesara Bandara Eknayake.
