Contingency plan for El Niño impact

A special discussion was held at the Ministry of Trade under the chairmanship of Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe to assess possible impacts of the global El Niño conditions on the supply and prices of essential commodities in Sri Lanka and to take precautionary measures.

Minister Samarasinghe pointed out that although the direct impact of the El Niño phenomenon on Sri Lanka may be limited, its impact on other countries could have indirect effects on the supply of essential food items in Sri Lanka. Therefore, he stressed the importance of maintaining adequate stocks of essential imported food commodities as a precautionary measure.

During the discussion, information was sought from importers regarding their existing stocks of essential food commodities, while data maintained by Sri Lanka Customs was also reviewed.

The Minister requested importers of essential food items to refrain from making statements that could create unnecessary public panic and urged them to act responsibly by treating the matter as a national issue.

Detailed discussions were held with importers on maintaining adequate supplies of essential food commodities, including dhal, potatoes, onions, dried fish and sugar, in the market without shortages and ensuring price stability.

It was also agreed to continuously monitor market conditions and weather patterns and take necessary decisions to prevent possible shortages or price increases in the future.
