Complaint Filed Regarding UN External Accountability Mechanism
03-Nov-2025.
The UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) has officially confirmed that it is reviewing a complaint concerning the external accountability mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council relating to Sri Lanka.
OIOS assists the UN Secretary-General in discharging his responsibilities for oversight of staff and resources through internal audit, investigation, inspection, and evaluation.
Accordingly, a complaint regarding the external accountability mechanism implemented by the UN Human Rights Council on Sri Lanka was submitted to OIOS on 16 September last year by a non-governmental organization jointly with three Sri Lankan citizens.
The complaint argued that establishing such a mechanism without Sri Lanka’s consent, beyond the principles of the UN Charter, raises questions about its legality and the UN’s institutional framework.
As the matter is under internal review, OIOS has declined to release further details, citing confidentiality.
