Case Against Shashi Weerawansa Postponed

The case against Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, concerning the obtaining of a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents has been postponed until 12 October.

The case was taken up for hearing on 28 September 2026 before Colombo Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama. Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who had been sentenced to imprisonment and subsequently released on bail, appeared before court for the hearing.

It was informed to court during the proceedings that the Colombo High Court had upheld the prison sentence imposed by the Magistrate’s Court on Shashi Weerawansa in connection with obtaining a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents. It was further stated that Shashi Weerawansa had filed an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the said judgment.

Thereafter, as the Supreme Court had not issued a time schedule in respect of the said appeal, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court postponed the hearing until 12 October, granting time for the filing of the relevant matter.

Shashi Weerawansa, who was convicted of obtaining a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents, was sentenced by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on 27 May 2022 to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 100,000.

The judgment further stated that, in the event of failure to pay the fine, an additional six months’ imprisonment would be imposed. It is noteworthy that Shashi Weerawansa has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court seeking to be acquitted of the said sentence of imprisonment and fine.
