14-Oct-2026.
The Cabinet has approved the award of a contract to widen and upgrade a specified section of the Kandy–Jaffna Road under the national highway expansion programme.
The approval was granted to a proposal submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. The project will involve widening and upgrading the road section between kilometre markers 58+240 and 63+000.
A total of eight bids were received under the national competitive bidding process. Based on the recommendations of the High-Level Procurement Committee and the Procurement Appeals Board, the contract will be awarded to M/s Tudawe Brothers (Pvt) Ltd, which submitted the lowest evaluated bid among the eligible bidders.
The project will be implemented at a cost of Rs. 1.070 billion, excluding Value Added Tax (VAT) but including contingencies.
The improvement of this section is expected to ease traffic congestion between Kandy and Jaffna and significantly enhance road safety and infrastructure.
