Cabinet Approves School Supplies Allowance for Students in 2027

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to continue the school supplies allowance programme in 2027, providing assistance to students from families covered by the Aswesuma welfare scheme and to other students identified by the Ministry.

The proposal, submitted to the Cabinet by the President in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, has been approved. The programme, which was launched in 2025, will continue in 2027.

Under the scheme, Rs. 6,000 each will be deposited directly into the bank accounts of one million students from families covered by the Aswesuma welfare programme.

A further 500,000 students specifically identified by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education will receive vouchers worth Rs. 6,000 each.

The Government is continuing the programme to support the education sector amid the country’s economic challenges and to ease the financial burden of education on low-income families.
