The Cabinet has approved the publication in the Gazette of a new Bill aimed at preventing organised crime in Sri Lanka and protecting society from threats posed by underworld groups, followed by its submission to Parliament for approval.

The approval was granted for a joint proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.

The Bill, drafted by the Legal Draftsman and approved by the Attorney General, is based on strengthening at the national level the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime.

It primarily seeks to establish new legal provisions to prevent serious crimes and take stringent action against them through effective national and international institutional cooperation, while protecting society from threats posed by groups involved in organised criminal activities.
