The body of a Chinese national, believed to have been abducted and murdered by a group of fellow Chinese nationals in Colombo Port City, was recovered by Police on July 23, from a forested area in Karandana, Eheliyagoda.
Police have also arrested two Chinese nationals allegedly linked to the abduction near the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, while they were reportedly attempting to flee the country.
According to Police investigations, three Chinese nationals arrived in the Port City area in a cab during the early hours of July 23 to engage in recreational fishing. Shortly afterwards, another group of Chinese nationals arrived in two vehicles and allegedly assaulted the trio.
During the attack, one of the Chinese nationals was forcibly abducted. The suspects abandoned the van in which they had travelled and fled the scene. Police officers who searched the abandoned vehicle recovered an air pistol.
Meanwhile, acting on intelligence regarding the illegal manufacture of liquor in the Karandana-Ketugoda area, an Eheliyagoda Police team conducting a search noticed a suspicious pile of stones in a forested location. Upon closer inspection, officers observed what appeared to be a human hand protruding from beneath the stones.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of a human body concealed under the rocks. The deceased was later identified as the Chinese national who had been abducted from Colombo Port City.
The body has been transferred to the Avissawella Hospital for further investigations. Police also recovered a motor vehicle near the location where the body was found and suspect that it had been used to transport the victim's remains.
Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler stated that the two arrested Chinese nationals were taken into custody near the Bandaranaike International Airport while allegedly attempting to leave the country.
The suspects have been handed over to the Coastal Police Division for further investigations. Police have intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects connected to the incident. However, the motive behind the clash between the two groups has not yet been established.
