The Government is considering amendments to the Ayurveda Act No. 31 of 1961 with the aim of modernising and strengthening the legal framework governing the Ayurveda sector, Deputy Health Minister Dr Hansaka Wijemuni has said.

He said the Ministry of Health was seeking the views of various stakeholders on the proposed amendments to the Ayurveda Act, alongside the proposed amendments to the Homoeopathy Act.

The main objective is to update the legislation in line with current requirements, he said. The Act has already been amended several times, with the most recent changes to the Ayurveda Medical Council and its administrative regulations introduced through the Ayurveda (Amendment) Act No. 19 of 2023.

He said the proposed review is aimed at further updating the legal framework governing Ayurveda to meet present-day requirements.
