Approve establishment of medical faculty, says MP Hizbullah

The establishment of a medical faculty at the South Eastern University would contribute significantly to the country’s development and economy. Therefore, if the Government grants approval for the project, we are prepared to secure the required funds from the Kuwait and Saudi development funds, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress MP M.L.A.M. Hizbullah said.
He made these remarks while moving a Private Member’s Motion calling for the establishment of a medical faculty at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
Speaking further, he said:
“Former Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader M.H.M. Ashraff took steps to establish the South Eastern University with the objective of promoting reconciliation among communities and advancing higher education in the South Eastern region. Today, the university is functioning successfully with more than 10,000 students from the three communities and six faculties.
“In 2022, Abu Bakr Ramees, who was serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the time, prepared a proposal to establish a medical faculty at the university and made several efforts in this regard. However, those efforts could not be realised due to the economic crisis faced by the country.
“Nevertheless, there is now a need to establish a medical faculty at the university. For this purpose, the Nintavur Jumma Mosque donated approximately seven acres of land to the Ministry of Health. The Ministry subsequently constructed a hospital on the land at a cost of approximately Rs.100 million.
“Establishing a medical faculty requires the joint involvement of six institutions in Sri Lanka: the South Eastern University, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, University Grants Commission and Sri Lanka Medical Council.
“We can also secure the financial assistance required for this purpose. If the Ministry of Education submits a request through the Ministry of Finance, we can obtain the full amount required from the Kuwait and Saudi development funds,” he said.
