Karu Jayasuriya, Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice, stated that appointing an Auditor General from within the National Audit Department is a significant step taken by the Constitutional Council in moving in the right direction.

Following the Constitutional Council meeting held last week at the Parliamentary Complex under the chairmanship of Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, unanimous approval was granted for the appointment of Senior Deputy Auditor General Samudika Jayaratne as Auditor General. She has since assumed duties.

Commenting on the appointment and the recent inclusion of three new civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council, former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya posted on his official X account that he welcomed the new civil society members appointed during a critical period.

He emphasized that appointing an Auditor General from within the National Audit Department represents a major step toward the right path.

He further noted that the Constitutional Council, established under the Constitution, is a cornerstone of balanced governance. He also commended the three outgoing civil society members whose terms are ending for steadfastly upholding constitutional principles despite pressure and threats from successive governments.
