Appeal to Be Filed Against Pujith Jayasundara's Death Sentence

Former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara will appeal to the Supreme Court against the death sentence imposed on him by the three-judge Trial-at-Bar in connection with the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, his counsel Rohan Dehiwala has announced.

Speaking to the media after meeting Jayasundara, who is currently being held at Welikada Prison following his conviction, Dehiwala said discussions had been held regarding the filing of the appeal.

"We discussed the legal options available following the death sentence. An appeal against the judgment delivered by the three-judge Trial-at-Bar will be filed before the Supreme Court next week," he said.

He noted that an appeal must be lodged within 25 days of the delivery of the judgment.

"As our client is dissatisfied with the verdict, we will exercise his legal right to challenge the judgment before the Supreme Court," Dehiwala added.
