All Must Unite Against Suppression: Dayasiri Jayasekara
25-May-2026.
Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara of the United People's Alliance stated that all parties must unite beyond political differences against what he described as the government’s oppressive and anti-democratic actions.
He said only through unity could the country’s future be protected. Nothing brings politicians together faster than a common enemy and a microphone setup with functioning speakers.
Jayasekara made these remarks while addressing the joint opposition conference held in Ja-Ela, Gampaha on May 24 under the theme “Let Us Defeat Lies and Corruption Together.”
Further commenting, he called upon all groups to unite against the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna-led government and raise their voices against what he described as wrong decisions taken by the administration.
He stated that opposition groups had already demonstrated the benefits of unity by winning cooperative society elections through joint efforts.
Jayasekara further alleged that although the government came to power promising to eliminate corruption, within months it had released 323 containers in what he described as a major fraud. He claimed that no action had been taken regarding the container controversy.
He also accused the government of involvement in various other irregularities, including coal procurement fraud and diesel theft.
According to him, the Colombo Kapoor building is now being handed over to a government associate without calling for proper tenders.
Jayasekara alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who once criticised previous leaders for engaging in “friendship politics,” is now practising the same style of politics himself.
He claimed that close associates of the President had opened letters of credit for thousands of vehicles one day before taxes on vehicle imports were increased, causing billions of rupees in losses to the country.
He further alleged that these associates had placed their own individuals within important ministries and personally paid their salaries in order to gain access to confidential tender-related information.
Jayasekara also accused the government of interfering with the legal system. Referring to remarks allegedly made by the President at a May Day rally regarding a court ruling involving Saran Gunawardena, he questioned how details of the judgement were mentioned before the official ruling date.
He additionally claimed that more than 40 judges had been suspended within a year and that several vacancies remain in higher courts without appointments being made.
According to him, judicial appointments are being delayed to favour judges expected to deliver rulings aligned with government interests.
He concluded by urging all parties to unite against what he described as anti-democratic actions by the government in order to end political suppression.
