Akkaragam Hospital renovated under US–Sri Lanka joint effort
16-Sep-2025.
Through joint cooperation between the Sri Lanka Air Force and the United States Air Force, the Akkaragam Regional Hospital in Sri Lanka has been renovated.
The project, costing approximately 40.5 million Sri Lankan rupees, was recently inaugurated.
The renovation was planned and executed under the joint supervision of engineers from the Sri Lankan Ministries of Defence and Health, the Sri Lanka Air Force, and the US Air Force.
About LKR 40.5 million (USD 135,000) was spent on this project, reflecting the shared commitment of both countries to supporting local communities.
The hospital’s building structure, roof, electrical and water systems, air-conditioning, power generation, and interior facilities have been upgraded.
The Akkaragam Hospital, which treats over 45,000 patients annually, has now been upgraded with nine specialized units. As most of the patients come from lower socio-economic backgrounds, the hospital is a vital resource.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, who visited the renovated facilities, said: “By sharing resources and expertise, we have not only improved essential infrastructure but also strengthened trust between our nations. What we are building together today lays the foundation for shared security in the future. When our partners are secure, the United States is more secure as well.”
This project is also seen as strengthening military and public welfare ties between Sri Lanka and the United States in the Indo-Pacific region.
