The government has engaged in discussions with regional countries to ensure the security of the Indian Ocean and the safety of neighboring nations. It has been decided to store 87 bodies recovered from the area near the attacked Iranian ship in two refrigerated containers.

Prime Minister and Minister Nalin Jayatissa, representing the ruling party, stated that the opposition has been urged not to exploit the current tense situation.

During the parliamentary session on March 5, while responding to questions from opposition members, including the Leader of the Opposition, regarding the attack on the Iranian ship near Sri Lankan waters, he made the above remarks.

He further noted that the Middle East is currently experiencing a highly volatile situation. In this context, all must refrain from spreading false or misleading information that could incite public anger. Everyone is urged to act responsibly under the present circumstances.

Reports indicate that a vessel outside Sri Lankan waters met with an accident, and human bodies were observed floating. The Sri Lanka Navy and the Maritime Security Authority were informed immediately. Under international law, the Navy is obliged to act promptly.

Following these reports, the Navy conducted rapid rescue operations. Initially, 30 individuals were safely rescued and admitted to Kalubowila Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of 87 individuals have been brought to Kalubowila Hospital. Since government hospitals lack refrigerated storage, it has been decided to procure two refrigerated containers from a private source to store them safely.

Discussions with regional countries are ongoing to ensure maritime and national security. The government has requested that the recovered Iranian nationals not be viewed in a misleading context.
