“A group is attempting to assassinate me” – Jagath Witharana

Jagath Witharana, Member of Parliament for Kalutara District representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), stated in Parliament that intelligence reports had revealed an attempt by a certain group to shoot and assassinate him.

He said that the Inspector General of Police had informed the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Kalutara District through an official letter to take immediate action to ensure his security and to investigate the matter without delay.

Speaking in Parliament on 24 October 2025, Witharana stated:

“The IGP has instructed the DIG of Kalutara District in writing that intelligence information has been received regarding a plot to shoot me when I leave my residence. The letter also mentions the name of the person involved in the assassination attempt. Therefore, I urge that prompt measures be taken to guarantee my safety. I hereby table the IGP’s letter sent to the Kalutara DIG and call for immediate action.”
